Pelvic Floor Essentials with Sue Croft

Physiotherapist

Author “Pelvic Floor Recovery: Physiotherapy for Gynaecological and Colorectal Repair Surgery” and “Pelvic Floor Essentials”

In this podcast, I talk with Sue about the role of Pilates Instructors and pelvic floor health, as well as her book Pelvic Floor Essentials.

A few things I learned from this interview was that it is ok to slouch and it is also good to sit like a man, and that to see a Pelvic Physiotherapist you don’t need a referral from a GP. And I also learned how to take a dump. Opps! I mean defecate….

It started about 30 years ago when I had my last child and I did 4 hours a week relieving at a major hospital in Brisbane. When that little locum job had finished, the girl who was doing pelvic health physiotherapy left and they asked me would I do it. Nobody wanted to do it then because they had all not had their children and no one wanted to do the internal examinations. Because I had my three children, I thought yes, I’ll go and do the courses and I’d be happy to that – not a problem. So I went and did the courses and I realised that after my own three children I had a fair bit of pelvic floor dysfunction which I wasn’t really aware of. It really blew me out of the water a little bit that I had this little secret! That I had issues that I hadn’t really pinpointed – it meant there was pelvic floor dysfunction there. So what happened was I then just became passionate about it. I love it! It is very rewarding when you can help someone who has a very silent problem and an unknown one like I had myself and you’re able to bring them along that journey and to teach them how to learn what is normal for bladder and bowel…..
